Why You Want a Self-Managing Team

February 23, 2022
Is your current Team self-managing? Do they feel empowered to take the initiative to get work done? Is there a manager hovering dictating the Team’s every task? Are you maybe that manager?

According to The 2020 Scrum Guide, Scrum Teams are cross-functional, meaning the members have all the skills necessary to create value each Sprint. They are also self-managing, meaning they internally decide who does what, when, and how.

Having a self-managing Team is crucial for having a successful Agile Organization. You need a Team that can inspect and adapt on their own, not wait around for direction.

Self-managing Teams:

Take pride in their work

Set their own timelines and deadlines that are more likely to be met

Feel a strong sense of responsibility

Are more engaged

Feel psychologically safe

Are more productive

Feel empowered and satisfied

Create better Products and happier customers

Self-Managing Teams Have Agile Leaders

But self-managing Teams don’t just form. They’re purposefully created through the hiring process and through Agile Leadership. As a reminder, Agile Leaders know when to step aside and let their Teams self-manage, so that they can concentrate on their own tasks, like strategy, mentoring and coaching, and helping create an Agile Organization.
